This market area provides the focus for members of the Society of Maritime Industries with interests in the business of supplying systems, equipment and services to any offshore activity but in particular the offshore energy industry.  Typically member companies develop specialist offshore systems and equipment and provide services and facilities around the world for offshore renewable energy installations and the oil and gas industry, including for  LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminals and storage, FLNG (floating liquefied natural gas) vessels and facilities and FPSO (floating production storage and offloading) platforms. Also associated with this market are those companies which supply equipment and services for every type of offshore facility and vessel associated with the exploration and production of energy resources, from low tonnage workboats to fixed, floating and semi-submersible platforms.

Organising the UK group, often in association with UK Trade and Investment, to major international trade shows.

Ports & terminals infrastructure :

This market area provides the focus for the members of the Society of Maritime Industries with interests in the development and operation of ports and terminals and the associated logistics activities and facilities.  It brings together technical and management skills in support of design, planning, structural engineering, construction, financing, development and operation of new and existing facilities.  Participants in the group’s activities include port owners and operators; shippers; freight forwarders; planners; specialist engineering, design and technical consultancies; international contractors; manufacturers of a variety of port and terminal equipment; banks and financiers; accountants; insurance brokers and law firms.

Activities include:

Sector specific outward trade missions to new, developing and established trade markets often in association with UK trade and Investment.

Facilitating member meetings with inward missions of delegates from overseas markets seeking UK capability in the development and operation of their ports and terminals.

A regular programme of meetings on various aspects of port development and operations with senior high calibre speakers.  Some of these meetings are restricted to members only.

Assistance with sourcing relevant contacts within the industry.

Naval and maritime defense :

This market area provides the focus for the naval and maritime defence interests of member companies of the Society of Maritime Industries.  Member companies range from large corporations to small manufacturers and systems houses.  Their products and services cover virtually everything associated with modern warships, submarines, coastguard and other government related vessels.

A range of activities is undertaken to assist companies with both the domestic UK and export business including:

Organising the UK group, in association with UKTI DSO, to major international trade shows such as DIMDEX, Euronaval, Exponaval and  Pacific.

Facilitating outward and inward trade missions to create business opportunities through greater international cooperation.

Supporting companies in challenging discriminatory applications of regulations, lobbying for beneficial amendments on regulatory and fiscal issues through the Defence Industries Council

Fostering relations with UK parliamentary maritime interest groups, promoting dialogue between the maritime defence industries and UK and European non-governmental organisations.

Organizing networking opportunities through regular briefings, presentations, lunches and dinners, researching and disseminating information from the Ministry of Defence and data relevant to the maritime defence industry.

Maritime security & safety :

This market area provides a focus for member companies of the Society of Maritime Industries that have a specific interest in maritime security and safety issues in the development of their business. The scope of maritime security and safety encompasses all operational and technical issues that permit authorities responsible for the maritime environment, together with mariners on fixed and floating maritime assets, vessels, cargoes and passengers, to continue their activities in a timely fashion, safely and free from interference.

A number of activities are pursued in support of the Society’s four main objectives: assisting members in the development of their domestic and export business; helping to shape the maritime business environment through beneficial change; organising net-working and communication opportunities for members; contributing to the provision of an ever expanding range of tangible member services.

Commercial maritime operations :

This market area is the focus for our interface with UK and international shipyards and ship owning communities.  Member companies seeking to develop their business associated with the building and operations all types of merchant ships and craft, including cargo vessels, container ships, tankers, bulkers, fishing boats, LNG carriers, FPSOs, specialist ships, passenger/car ferries, ro-ros, fast ships, superyachts and cruise liners are welcome to participate in the arranged activities.

Activities include: 

Organising the UK group to major international trade shows such as Asia Pacific Maritime, Kormarine, Marintec, Nor-shipping, Posidonia and SMM.

Outward trade missions to developing and established territories.

Inward trade missions of international ship owners and shipyard personnel to attend presentations in the UK by marine equipment and service firms.

Monitoring and assistance with regulations of relevance to the sector from the IMO and European Commission.

Assistance with relevant contacts in the industry

Opportunities to network with other members for system and sub-system
